Kalimpong Village Retreat, A Quaint Retreat in a Hilly Hamlet

Located a meagre 7km away from the Kalimpong city centre, this retreat boasts of a 6-acre property on the hill overlooking the dancing river Relli. The retreat has a couple of natural springs (isn’t that wonderful?) and indulges in organic farming. Terraced land cultivated with paddy dotted with beautiful Lepcha village huts embraces it like a beautiful green carpet.

The crisp mountain air, deliciously cooked local food with fresh ingredients from the farm itself and the picturesque view of the Relli valley along with Lava hills will surely refresh your mind, detoxify your body & enrich your soul. Accommodation

There are 5 cottages built fully with eco-friendly products consisting of mud plasters & bamboo. The retreat is a 100m walk from the main gate. The cottages have electricity but they are designed to maximize the use of daylight and have natural ventilation. The idea is to conserve our fast depleting resources & develop tourism sustainably along with economic upliftment of local villagers. The cottages are on twin sharing basis, extra persons are charged separately. Maximum of 15 persons can be accommodated after prior clearance.

Outdoor Activity

The retreat has its own organic farm and encourages guests to take part in daily farming activities. You can hand pick vegetables to be cooked or tend to the herbal gardens.

You can also participate in cooking classes of local cuisine, pottery workshop & bamboo craft.

The retreat arranges small hikes to nearby villages for You to enjoy the charm of rustic living.

If you are a bibliophile the property has a number of ‘sit outs’ where you can get lost in literature with a cuppa.

Nearby Attractions

Kalimpong though always dwarfed by the popularity & grandeur of Darjeeling is one of the best hill stations to view the majestic Kanchenjunga. You can always include the following local sights of Kalimpong in your tour plan.

Pedong : Situated 18 km from the retreat You can start your exploration from the small hamlet of Pedong. If you are an adventure lover You will be in for a delight. Activities of paragliding, hang- gliding, rock climbing and archery can be done here. Pedong also harbours the beautiful Bhutanese monastery of Sangchen.

Deolo Park :Deolo park is situated at the top of the highest hill of Kalimpong. A 20 mins drive from the retreat will bring you to Deolo where You will be mesmerized by the Kanchenjunga range in a clear day. The park which houses a colonial-era guest house is maintained by GTA. Recently battery operated carts have been introduced for tourists to take a tour of the park.

Durpin Dara : The second highest hill of Kalimpong, Durpin also offers amphitheatrically view of the mountains along with the gently flowing river Teesta. The Zang Dog Palri monastery AKA Durpin monastery is located at the hilltop. Inside are rare Buddhist manuscripts on Tibetology called ‘The Kangyur’.

Gouripur House :While returning from Durpin Dara visits Gouripur House, the summer retreat of Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore. The bard penned a lot of his classics here. On his birthday on 25th April 1940 (25th Baisakh), he recited his poem ‘ Jonmodin’ on the telephone which The All India Radio broadcasted live.

Doctor Graham’s Homes : You will want to go back to your school days once you set afoot this beautiful boarding school with its sprawling green campus of 500 acres just below the Deolo hill. The white building of Catherine Graham memorial chapel with a striking blue sky serving as the backdrop surrounded by dark green woods will definitely take your breath away.

Nurseries : Kalimpong is also home to many nurseries. A wide range of export quality Himalayan flowers, orchids are grown and nurtured here.

Best time to Visit

The retreat can be visited all year long although landslides are common during monsoons. The best months are from the 1st week of October to mid-December & Mid January to end of May.

How to Reach

The nearest railhead NJP is situated 75km from the retreat, it will take less than 3 hrs by car.

New Mal Jn. is located at a distance of 80km.

The nearest airport is Bagdogra 84km away.

After crossing the main city of Kalimpong you have to drive through the Rishi road and then turn right to Relli road to arrive at your destination.
