Mirik:The Place Where You Get Munnar and Nainital Together

Mirik:The Place Where You Get Munnar and Nainital Together

Mirik, a small hill station located on the banks of a huge lake in the vast Himalayan Valley, is near Darjeeling in West Bengal.

Nestled in the tranquil hills, the place is popularly known for its lakes and mountains but is often characterized by the picturesque and scenic natural beauty; it has to offer to its visitors. It derives its name from the Lepcha word“Mir-Yok” which means “place burnt by fire”.

Honestly, we couldn’t find any meaning of it given the landscape. But it might hint back to turbulent times in the tea gardens which it used to have in pre-independence India.

It is situated at a height of 1767m from sea level and that makes the weather gorgeous around the year.

Breathtaking View of Mirik Lake

This Place is the perfect getaway for a short trip to refresh you from the daily hustle and bustle of routine life. The exquisite nature of this hill town and its easy accessibility has made the place one of the known tourist destinations of North Bengal. However, do not be afraid of this place being over-crowded unless you are coming in peak season.

The small city is adorned with an umpteen number of sightseeing places in itself. However, hill stations like Kurseong, Darjeeling and Ghoom can also be travelled to from here in a day. The charm of this hill station lies in its tranquillity and serenity and therefore a must-visit for all hill lovers.

Lack of marketing and previously infrastructure didn’t make the place what Nainital is probably today. But with bettering infrastructure and increasing crowd in so-called popular places, you must visit this place before commercialization vandalize the natural beauty of the place.

The place provides its tourists with a number of hotels and accommodations as per your requirements. There’s quite a variety of budget stays along with the luxury ones. Nevertheless, it is a little difficult to find starred hotels over here.

The accommodation hub in the city is mostly on the southern side of the Mirik Lake- which is considered to be the centre of the town.

Dooars: All Info, Suggested Tour Itineraries and Best Places to Stay

Dooars as A Tourism Destination

The Dooars is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalaya mountain range. It is a magnificent region full of green hills and valley, jungle, rivers and tea plantations. The origin of the name comes from the Bengali word “Duar” which means door or gateway.

This vast region acts as a doorway to major Himalayan Wildlife habitats. It also functions as the gateway to the hills in India and Bhutan. It is the home of many exotic species and rich in the exquisite natural beauty. Major rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Murti, Torsa etc. flow through this nitrate-rich valley.

The three “T”- Tourism, Tea and Timber plays the role of most important economic factors in this area. The winter is chilly and the summer weather is pleasing. When the weather is clear, blue sky and green jungle welcome you to this piece of paradise in North Bengal.

Dooars

Different Parts and Places of Dooars:

Dooars is a region full of diversity. With its huge area, the landscape, weather and beauty changes frequently from one place to the other. Tourists flock to this region to enjoy the beauty of the hills, rivers and forests. Winter temperature falls rapidly here, and the summer is soothing.

The rain is abundant; the trees grow to their full potential and length, forming a canopy. The good condition of the roads makes it one of the best monsoon destination in the state too. The ecstatic beauty of the eye-soothing verdure forest and the sweet song of the birds will provide you with the inner peace and calmness you seek after a tiring urban life.

Dooars tourism highlights and takes pride in the majestic mountains, various flora and fauna, tea gardens, perennial and lively springs, sandy river shores and the wide patches of grassland. There are several colonial-era heritage buildings in this area, especially near the tea-gardens.

Located in the prime spots, they provide an enchanting view over the surrounding area of gardens, hills and river bed. If you are driven by wanderlust, Dooars is a must-visit place for you.

After a day of visiting the major sightseeing points, relax under the starry sky in front of a bonfire, or watch the sunrise from the balcony of your room with a cup of tea in your hand- Dooars offers you numerous choices.

You can go to the tourist-favourite places, or explore the less-crowded options, which are unspoilt and nature is in their full glory.

Dooars Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature across the year in Dooars:

The weather in Dooars is pleasant throughout the year. In summer the temperature does not go above 26°C, which is relatively less than the surrounding areas. In winter, it goes down to 2-3°C but does not touch the freezing point in general.

As the place is at the mountain foothills, it experiences longer monsoon though.  For these favourable weather condition, the forest canopy grows very fast and the hills often stay green.

In the table below, we can get a basic idea of the temperature throughout the year

Dooars-weather-and-temperature

Dooars Weather and Temperature Chart

Winter

From the month of October to February, it is winter in the Dooars. The temperature goes down gradually and when the sun comes out- the weather becomes pleasant.

With the progress of winter, the mercury may drop near the freezing point, but snow is very uncommon in this area. Generally, the temperature hovers around 5 – 20°C. This pleasant weather is the perfect time for local festivals like the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival between November and December.

Monsoon

The season begins in June with sporadic rains, but July is the true beginning of the monsoon season in here. It lasts till September, sometimes early October.

Samsing-Dooars-in-Monsoon

Samsing Dooars in Monsoon

The average rainfall here varies between 35 – 50 cm. Between July and August, it rains cats and dogs in this region. The rivers run beyond capacity and the barrages often overload. This time of the year is the breeding season of the animals, so most of the sanctuaries remain closed between mid-June and mid-September.

Summer

The season begins in March and continues until early June. The temperature ranges from 20 to 35°C. The morning and evening are very pleasant, but the noon and early afternoon hours face scorching heat, especially near the sandy riverbeds.

Tea-Garden-in-Dooars-in-Summer-Morning

Tea Garden in Dooars in Summer Morning

The grassland withers, the rise in the heat and humidity level become uncomfortable for the tourists. This season has a relatively better chance of wildlife sighting owing to a less amount of greenery.

Best Time to Visit Dooars

The best time to visit Dooars is in the winter seasons. This time the weather is pleasant and perfect for enjoying the jungle safaris. As monsoon just ends, the rain transforms the forest into a green paradise and the rivers run full to the brim. The weather remains pleasantly cool during the day and cold in the night. Therefore travellers consider winter to be the best time to explore the sanctuaries and enjoy the jungle safaris.

How to Reach Dooars

The monsoon is not the most favourite time for general tourists. However, for the romantic, off-beat travellers and the adrenaline-freaks, it is a great time to come and experience the rain-soaked forest life. The roads are in comparatively good condition which makes it a major monsoon travel destination in West Bengal.

Except for the peak season, summer is a good time to visit and enjoy the beauty too, if you are ready to brave the heat and humidity in the noon.

Dooars is one of the most popular and diverse tourist destinations in West Bengal and North-East India. In all the major tourist spots, there are several staying options which vary as per the budget and choice of the traveller.

However, owing to the crowd rush in the tourist season, most of them stay full months in advance.

Some properties are well-placed near the jungle or tea-estate, with a good view over the nearby forest or tea estates. There are various other options in the nearby towns. These properties do not offer a good view, but they are inside the budget segment.

Kalimpong is around 50 Km on the east side of Darjeeling and is located at an altitude of 1200 metres above sea level. This place was once a trade hub between India and Tibet.

This dates back to the time when merchants would ferry trade goods on mule caravans that would run over the Sikkim-Tibet border pass.

There are a number of places for sightseeing and although this might not be as bustling as the town of Darjeeling, it still attracts a large influx of tourists every year.

The small hilly town is beautifully ornamented with well-manicured gardens, natural lakes and majestic mountain ranges. There are unlimited options for adventure, food-hunting and temple exploration.

How to Go to Kalimpong ? from Siliguri | New Jalpaiguri | Bagdogra

This place is 68.3 Km away from Siliguri and Bagdogra. It takes around 2 and a half hours to drive from Siliguri. From Siliguri, you will find a number of transportation options to reach there. Both private and shared taxis are available throughout the day.

You will also find buses plying from Tenzing Norway Bus Terminal on Hill Cart Road in Siliguri.

The journey from Siliguri is mesmerizing. In the first half of the journey, you will travel on NH10 through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. The forests are dense and form a natural habitat for many wild animals like tiger, bison and elephant.

NJP-to-Kalimpong-Road-Map

Road Map From NJP

Among many sights and sounds of the forest, you might spot a deer fleeing past your jeep, a majestic elephant crossing the way in front or a bison walking away unperturbed by the intrusion of humans. Your driver will be careful not to honk in this part of the journey so as to maintain the calm and composure of the sanctuary.

At Sevok, the sanctuary will give way to a massive river basin, hilly terrain and a boisterous Teesta River. The forested landscape will transform into a hilly area with sharp turns and hairpin bends. You will cruise alongside the river at varying altitudes.

The last phase of the journey begins from Teesta Bazaar. A sharp turn uphill from this point will lead you to the town. You will no longer be able to view the Teesta River when you are around the town.

Kurseong: Ultimate Guide To Plan Your Trip

Kurseong: Ultimate Guide To Plan Your Trip

Kurseong: The Land of White Orchids. The name behind this quaint little town situated close to Darjeeling has an obvious reason. The hill-slopes of Kurseong are home to innumerable white orchids that make the landscape look bright and beautiful. A hill station, located around 30 Km from Darjeeling, Kurseong is locally known as “Kharsang”. Kharsang, in Lepcha language, means ‘Land of White Orchids’.

Located at 1458 feet above sea level and has a pleasant climate all year round. The weather is more moderate than Darjeeling and tourism is a major source of livelihood of this hill station.

Panoramic View of Kurseong City

Panoramic View of the City

This place is around 47 Km away from Siliguri and Bagdogra. It is connected to the heart of the city via road and via the Darjeeling Toy Train. You can reach this beautiful town from all other parts of India and across the globe via Bagdogra Airport which is a maximum of 1 hour and 20 minutes away.

Since the year 1880, this has been a place for rejuvenation of the mind, soul and body. The British Viceroys would escape to this hill station to recover from illnesses. It continues to be an escape destination from the nation’s heatwaves.

Kurseong Weather, Temperature and Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from the 1st week of March to the 1st week of May and again from the 1st week of October to the last week of November.

Temperature

Temperatures here tend to vary a little. Although it does get humid during certain parts of the year, temperatures feel pleasant all through. There are only a couple of weeks in the winter months when it could feel really cold. The fair amount of humidity leads to precipitation for almost 6 months in a year.

Kurseong-in-Summer

Summer Time

This hamlet town has one of the most temperate weather conditions across tourist destinations in the world. The three hottest months of the year are June, July and August.

A typical day in the month of July will feel like 27.1 degrees C and night will witness a temperature of not less than 18.5 degrees C.

The Factor Of Feels-like Temperature

The temperature of a particular area is not the only deciding factor behind experiencing the weather. If higher temperatures are accompanied by higher levels of humidity, then the discomfort invariably increases. Similarly, if colder temperatures come along with cold winds, the ‘feels-like’ temperature goes down a few points on the thermometer.

Thus humidity and the chill of the winds play important roles in deciding the weather conditions here.

When does it rain and snow in here?

Significant amounts of rainfall occur in the month of August. There is also the possibility of snowfall this month. The months that have the lowest chance of rainfall are from November to February. These are more or less dry spells and tourists love this kind of weather for uninterrupted wandering around.
